SEIU Local 2015 is seeking a strategic and ambitious Director of Communications to lead the communications work for one of the country’s largest local unions.
A leader on the cutting edge of progressive activism, Local 2015 is building power for workers and fighting for social, racial, and economic justice. Representing over 385,000 home care, skilled nursing facility, and assisted living center workers across the state of California, Local 2015 is the largest organization representing women of color in the state.
The Communications Director will develop and implement the union’s strategic communications plan and serve as a strategic partner for union officers. The Communications Director will support the growth and impact of the union by elevating its public profile and ensuring message alignment across its political, organizing, and community activities.

- Create and implement forward-thinking, union-wide branding, messaging, and communications plans which target diverse audiences, including members, allies, the media, policy makers, and political leaders
- Develop and direct campaign communications, media strategy, and member-to-member communications programs
- Lead media relations, including pitching, building reporter relationships, and crisis communications with statewide press
- Serve as a partner to union officers on developing and executing communications strategies and setting benchmarks to track progress
- Recruit, manage, inspire, and support a diverse and growing communications team in offices throughout California
- Identify and train members to be media spokespeople in multiple languages
- Create and implement plans for public and media engagement for union officers
- Manage the development and administration of department budgets
- Work cross departmentally with diverse stakeholders
- Ensure the union is maintaining a social media presence and is on the cutting edge of new media advancements
- Act as spokesperson for the union when necessary
- Work effectively with other locals, SEIU State Council, SEIU International, and community groups
- Embrace, promote and demonstrate the organizations’ core values of leadership, excellence, compassion, accountability, transparency, and empowerment
- A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in campaign communications, media relations, or public affairs, including at least three years managing strategy and program
- A record of success in communications positions in the advocacy, union, not-for-profit, political, or government sectors
- Superb interpersonal skills, with an impressive history of forging strong relationships with multiple stakeholders
- A record of recruiting, developing, mentoring, and managing a diverse and talented communications staff
- Demonstrated experience at integrating communications strategy into the fabric of an organization and effectively reaching and influencing intended audiences.
- Extensive experience in developing and implementing all aspects of strategic communications for large, hard-hitting public policy campaigns
- Development and execution of successful advocacy campaigns which used digital and social media channels
- Excellent writing, editing, and design skills
- Familiarity with local, statewide, and national media and social media influencers
- Deep commitment to social, racial, and economic justice
- Attunement to the diverse experiences and perspectives of people of color a must
- Experience in and knowledge of the California political landscape preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred
Bachelor’s degree preferred
